I followed him to the entrance to Central Forty-six when he jumped through a hole in the door and disappeared down the stairs. I stood there a moment, unsure of my train of thought. Should I follow him down there? It is forbidden to lieutenants and seated officers…but what choice did I have?
I felt a strong reiatsu behind me. I whirled around to see Unohana-taicho and Isane-fukutaicho.
“Iwadoshi-chan! What are you doing here?” Isane asked.
“I can feel Hitsugaya-taicho’s reiatsu. Am I correct?” Unohana said.
I nodded and looked down at the ground. Why was she so right?
“I wanted to make sure he would be alright.” I said.
“Understandable.” Unohana smiled.
Suddenly, there was a huge flair of reiatsu that I knew all too well. I gasped and ran through the hole in the door.
~He released his bankai! ~ I thought frantically as I raced down the stairs.
I reached the bottom of the stairs and stared in horror of the sight before my eyes. Aizen was standing behind Toushirou. His zanpaku-to was covered in blood. Then, to my horror, Toushirou’s shoulder split open as blood rushed out. He staggered a bit, but stayed up.
“That’s impossible…” he muttered.
The ice wings of Daiguren Hyorinmaru broke apart and Toushirou fell to the ground.
“Toushirou…” I said. No response.
“No! Toushirou!” I shouted.
I ran past Gin and up the stairs to him. He wasn’t moving at all.
“Toushirou…” I repeated.
Once again, no response. Tears escaped my eyes. I knelt down beside his motionless body, looking at his eyes. They were clouded over and staring into nothing. I put my hand against his face and cried. It was all I could do.
“What a beautiful sight.” Aizen said, “It’s the wrong season, but seeing ice this time of year is nice.”
I looked over my shoulder at him, eyes full of sadness, hate, and rage.
“You BASTARD!” I shouted.
He looked over at me. I saw the faintest hint of a smirk. God, did I hate this man.
“You’re the second person today I’ve surprised with a body. I really need to remember to cut them up into little pieces and hide them so they’ll never be found.” He said.
“SHUT UP!” I shouted, “How dare you even think that! And how dare you hurt Toushirou!”
I was soooo angry. I could feel my wrist band, feeding off the energy to form an attack. I held it back.
“Aizen-taicho. No, that’s wrong. It wouldn’t be right to call you taicho any longer. Sousuke Aizen. You’re title is High Traitor.” Unohana said.
She and Isane were standing at the entrance.
“Aleshi. I need you to put a barrier around yourself and Hitsugaya-taicho.” She instructed.
I nodded and un-sheathed my zanpaku-to.
“Shine, Ginryu.” I muttered and tossed my zanpaku-to into the air. It transformed and I caught it, immediately thrusting it into the ground.
“Blinding light.” I breathed.
A shield of pure light surrounded Toushirou and I from Aizen. The barrier could protect from any type of attack.
I knelt down beside Toushirou again. I looked at him closely. He was still breathing. Just barely, but he was. My heart skipped a beat. I needed to be sure…
“Hitsugaya-taicho? Can you hear me?” I asked.
~Of course he can’t hear you, Baka! ~ my wristband yelled angrily.
~Shut up! ~ I replied.
“A…leshi?”
I caught my breath. Was it my imagination or… I scrambled closer to Toushirou’s face.
“Taicho! Are you alright?” I asked frantically.
Tears were coming into my eyes again. He barely shook his head.
“What …about…you?” he breathed. “I’ve only been worried about you.
” I said, “Don’t talk too much.”
“I’ll…be…fine.” He breathed. I smiled weakly.
This just about tore my heart in two pieces.
“About what…you said earlier…was it…true?”
My heart sank and my smile faded. He had to bring this up. I nodded slowly.
“Hai, taicho. Every word.” I said.
There was an awkward silence for a long time. The barrier suddenly became a very interesting place. I looked around it, noticing it was glowing a dim blue color. Kind of like ice. Usually, this meant that the threat was either gone or eliminated.
I reached for my zanpaku-to to remove the barrier. I gave a swift pull and it came out of the ground, the barrier disappearing immediately. I quickly ran over to Unohana-taicho.
“Can you save him? Will he be okay?” I asked worriedly.
“Right now, I cannot say for sure, but I will try to save the life of Hitsugaya-taicho.” She replied.
I looked down at my feet. I was crying again. Damn my sensitivity!
“But, if you would like, you may come with me to the Fourth Squad Barracks.” She added. I looked up and nodded.
“Arigato, Unohana-taicho.”
